Philosophy

Judo was founded in 1882 by Jigoro Kano, who established the art as both a physical discipline and a system of moral education. Kano believed that the practice of judo should develop not only physical skill, but also character, responsibility, and respect for others.

Two core principles guide the practice of judo:

Seiryoku Zenyo (Maximum Efficient Use of Energy)
This principle teaches practitioners to use technique, timing, and balance rather than brute strength. By applying energy efficiently, a judoka can overcome larger or stronger opponents while minimizing unnecessary effort.

Jita Kyoei (Mutual Welfare and Benefit)
This concept emphasizes cooperation and respect between training partners. Judo training is based on helping one another improve, creating an environment where all practitioners grow together both on and off the mat.

Through these principles, judo becomes more than a martial art—it becomes a lifelong path of physical development, self-discipline, and mutual respect.

Why Judo?

Judo goes beyond physical training. It builds character, courage, respect, and resilience, tested under real challenges. Train to overcome stress, refine your skills, and grow mentally and physically. Judo empowers you to excel on and off the mat.

Ronnie Nicholson

Founder / Owner / Lead Instructor

Rank: Godan

Ronnie Nicholson, founder and owner of Olympic Judo Dojo, began his judo journey in 1958 under the mentorship of World War II veteran Marty Martin, a pioneering figure in the introduction and development of judo in Louisiana. Inspired by Martin’s passion for competition and dedication to excellence, Nicholson quickly developed a lifelong commitment to the art of judo.

Over the decades, Nicholson continued to refine his skills while training under some of the most respected instructors in the sport, including Ryozo Nakamura and Nori Bunasawa. His studies also brought him into contact with world-renowned martial artists such as Gene LeBell, further broadening his knowledge and appreciation for the global traditions of judo.

Nicholson’s expertise reflects decades of dedicated training, study, and instruction. Beyond technical mastery, he has devoted his career to promoting the deeper principles of judo—discipline, respect, perseverance, and personal development—while mentoring generations of students.

In recognition of his experience and contributions to the sport, Nicholson has been recognized by USA Judo as a national-level judo coach. Through his leadership, teaching, and lifelong commitment to the art, he continues to inspire students and uphold the traditions established by the founder of judo, Jigoro Kano.
